Whitby Pulling No 1 1861 - 74
Coxswain Samuel Lacy was appointed Coxswain of theRNLB Lucy when it arrived in Whitbyin March 1861.
Cox Lacy was in charge of the Lifeboat Harriott Forteath on the early hours of 10thJanuary 1877 when the Lifeboat went to the Schooner Agnoria which was in distress in the harbour entrance. During the rescue attempt was the Lifeboat was upset by a large wave in the pitch darkness throwing the Lifeboat crew in to the water. As the Lifeboat was righted three men were missing; Cox Samuel Lacy and crewmen John Thompson and Richard Gatenby who were all lost.
Fortunately, the crew of the Agnoria were subsequently saved by the Coastguard team who managed to get a line aboard the vessel which the crew used to safety get ashore.
