Stationed at the Whitby old west side Lifeboat station on Pier Road before moving to the new Pier Road Boat House in 1895 however it was the norm for the No 2 boat to be left on a floating buoy mooring in the harbour in the winter months for ‘ready use’.
The boat was used during the Rohilla rescue, she made two trips to rescue crew/passengers from the stricken vessel saving 35 persons before she was severely damaged and could not be used further during the rescue. The boat was subsequently totally destroyed by the breaking seas.
During her career at Whitby, John Fielden was launched 40 times and saving 62 lives.
