On Station from 1870 – 1881 built at a cost of £248 7s6d and supplied by as a Legacy of A.J. Jaffery of London, she was 32’ in length Self-righting with ten (10) oars and was supplied with a new launching Carriage at a cost of £100 10s 0d stationed at the Whitby west side Lifeboat station on Pier Road. She was renamed Robert Whitworth after Honorary Treasurer of the Manchester Branch in recognition of his outstanding fundraising.
One most famous rescues the Robert Whitworth was involved in was the brig Visitor at 1881 at Robin Hoods Bay. Search 'rescues' and look for brig Visitor.
During her career at Whitby, Robert Whitworth served as the No 1 Lifeboat on the West Side until 1881 then transferring to Whitby No 2 boat launching twenty-two times and saving 130 lives in total.
The boat was disposed of locally in 1887.
