SS Ben Corlic
The SS Ben Corlic of North Shields which went ashore on 30 May 1902 on Upgang Beach near Whitby in poor visibility. Thirteen of the crew made their own way to shore in the steamer's boats, five were picked up by the Upgang lifeboat, and two were drowned in the surf. The ship was eventually refloated in September after being written off by the insurers and taken to Hartlepool for repairs.
The Ben Corlic was a collier owned by John Morrison and Son of North Shields. She was bound for Ancona in Italy with 2,312tons of coal from the Tyne.
